CHINESE Taipei’s Su-Wei Hsieh and Yen-Hsun Lu scored a miraculous upset over Argentina to maintain hope of still making the Hyundai Hopman Cup final.

The pair won the Asian Hopman Cup to qualify to play in Perth and are proving more than capable. A final possibility is still on the cards for the debutants if it can beat France and if Serbia loses to Argentina in the last night session.

Hsieh fought back from being 3-6, 3-5 down to beat Gisela Dulko in three sets in a marathon two-hour 26-minute match, which she was understandably delighted to win.

“Maybe there were too many people here watching me, so that makes me a little nervous at the start,” Hsieh said.

“I just told myself to slow it down and I know I had to ‘come on’ with so many people here from Chinese Taipei cheering for me.

“It’s a big win for me. It’s the first time I’ve beaten a top 50 player when her ranking was inside the top 50.”

Lu pushed world No. 3 Novak Djokovic to three sets in his opening Hyundai Hopman Cup match, and in his second blew Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela off the court 6-3, 6-4.

“After the first match I got some confidence and came out more aggressive and hit the ball closer to the line. From the beginning until the end I didn’t change that and that’s the key to me winning,” Lu said.

“We are happy the way it’s happening and would be to be in the final, but we are the lowest ranked team so we don’t look that far ahead. We just take it match by match, but now we have a chance and will just try to win tonight.”

Lu has a career-high ranking of 80, which is a massive achievement for a Chinese Taipei player and one he is proud to have accomplished.

“We don’t have too many professionals in our country. When I was young, I watched TV with guys like Pete Sampras and Pat Rafter and told myself that one day I could play the ATP tour for my country,” he said.

“From the beginning, people told me it was impossible, but I didn’t believe them, believed I could make it and finally I made it inside the top 100.”
